British flowers for April – May weddings

April 19, 2012 by admin Leave a Comment

A number of our readers have been asking what British grown flowers are available for weddings in April and May.

Although early in the year, there is still quite an array of British grown flowers available to the spring bride.

Lily of the Valley posy

Lily of the Valley is popular this year

Charlie Ryrie from The Real Cut Flower Garden regularly supplies natural British grown flowers for such occasions and advises us that tulips are amazing at this time of year, especially in beautiful cream, white and pink doubles that look like peonies in bouquets.

Forget-me-not like brunneras have dainty flowers in blues and whites which look great mixed with hyacinths and acid green euphorbias.

The Duchess of Cambridge used Lily of the valley for her wedding last April and as a result it is proving very popular this year.

Blue camassia, and scilla are available in April along with the rose like delicate blooms of ranunculus.

As we move into May the acid green/yellow flowers of alchemilla provide a delicate froth around sweet rocket in pinks and white, white camassia and blue centaurea.

Pinks are represented by spires of persicaria, peonies, iris and the first roses.  By the end of May the first annuals such as cornflowers, ammi and others are joined by more roses and peonies.

The Real Cut Flower Garden – Grow glorious old-fashioned and unusual flowers and foliage and create beautiful seasonal bouquets which can be delivered to your door.  These are flowers for anyone who appreciates gardens, a long way from standard florist fare.  Seasonal flower bouquets are available from April through October.
Wedding flowers are a speciality, glorious natural arrangements for any situation, whether you’re getting married in a cathedral or a field.

Peony Flowers

May 18, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

The Peony has a graceful, silky, delicate, blowsy bloom, similar to that of an old English rose and some varieties are well suited to being used as a cut flower.

Peony flower

The blousy romantic blooms of the peony are popular for weddings

The large, effervescent flowers create a stunning display but do have a very short season, with buds appearing around mid to late May.

For peonies to be successful as a cut flower, they need to be cut whilst in bud and conditioned. If done correctly, some varieties of peony can last longer in the vase than roses.

Peony flower colours vary from shades of delicate pale cream, pinks and corals through to deep burgundy red.

The early warm sunshine and then cooler temperatures of late May mean that 2011 could be the best year yet for peony blooms.

If you are looking to grow peonies for cut flowers or find a supplier of cut peony blooms, we have put together a list of some UK growers.

Grow Your Own Cut Flowers

July 5, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

Growing your own cut flowers can be quite inexpensive and does not have to take up too much time or space.

A couple of packets of sweet peas will provide arm fulls of blooms and can be grown against a sunny wall, fence or obelisk.
Cosmos are excellent value for money providing blooms from June through September and even October.  Ranging from white, many shades of pink and even yellows and oranges, there is one to suit every arrangement.  Their delicate feathery foliage form a feathery backdrop to other flowers in the garden and give softness to floral displays.
Garden Pinks are the wonderfully fragrant, more delicate version of the mass produced large carnation and can last up to two weeks in the vase.  Perennial versions which flower year after year are normally bought as young plants, but can be raised from seed.
Annual versions which flower for only one season are grown from seed.
There are literally hundreds of flowers to choose from, saving a small fortune in bought flowers and providing blooms that are not only diifferent and seasonal, but many of them have a magnificent perfume so often lacking in commercial imported blooms.
To find a fantastic variety of seeds and plants visit Marshalls Seeds.
